SKIN! This has been my biggest focus for the past year, my best friend and my enemy but by far my best focus this past week. New products, Light Therapy, Dermaplaning, Collagen Masks that is what my half term has consisted of! It's not just about knowing what your skin is like but understanding WHY it is like it is, this is when your skin can change DRAMATICALLY! Not that i'm being dramatic or anything (!)
Understanding your type of skin can be stressful, hard work, boring, frustrating and very time consuming especially when your skin type can change on a day-to-day basis. But it's time for you to dig skin deep with me now and help find a new path of discovering the skin you're in and learning to love it!
Skin types can cause stress when you don't know which products to use and which will do what they say on the tin without spending a fortune. I have learnt that you don't have to rob a bank to use the best skincare products....so stop drawing up your plans and cancel the order of fashionable balaclavas, I have the answers!
But let's take a step back and check what skin type you have. Don't know how to check? Here's how....
To check what type of skin you have figure out what your skin needs/what your skin looks like on a day-to-day basis.
The skin types as a 'norm' are:
Dry skin - If your skin feels dry, looks flaky, often feels a bit sore and red looking and feel that your makeup goes on glowy then suddenly looks matte and like your face has eaten your foundation then this is Mr Dry Skin!
Sensitive skin - If your skin hurts or feels irritated when using certain products, find that your skin burns easily and goes really red for long periods after leaving the shower it could be because you have sensitive skin.
Combination skin - If your skin has areas that is oily but you also have dry patches on your face then you have combination skin and may need to multi-mask your face with different products.
Oily Skin - If your skin looks shiny, find your makeup 'runs' off your face or you have residue on your fingers when you wipe your face then you more than likely suffer with oily skin. This does not mean that you need to stop moisturising and dry your face out.
Normal Skin - If you have read the above thinking 'Nope I don't have that' or 'No that's not my skin' then here you are! This one is you! Lucky thing! You guys can pretty much use anything!
Knowing what type of skin you have is one thing but understanding what having this type of skin means is a whole new ball game.
If you have dry skin this is because your skin does not produce enough Sebum. Sebum is the natural oils that your sebaceous glands produce.
Oily skin is because your skin produces TOO much Sebum.
Combination skin is when your skin is both oily and dry.
Sensitive skin is when your skin's nerve endings in the top layer of your skin become irritated and sometimes sore.
Normal skin owners are very lucky as they have neither oily nor dry nor sensitive skin and more than likely find they don't suffer much with their skin.
So what is it that causes us to have these skin issues? Well are they really an issue? Or is it something we can fix with a bit of knowledge and research?
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
What do I eat on a regular basis?
Do I exercise often?
Am I stressed a lot?
Do I have a good skincare regime?
Now once you have answered these, follow these answers up with:
Are the foods you eat high in oils, fats and sugars ? Are you eating enough greens and fruits? How many takeaways a week do you have? Do you drink a lot of water?
If you do exercise, do you shower and carry out a thorough skincare regime afterwards? If not, why not?
If you are stressed, why? is there anything that can alter this? Does your skin flare up more when you are stressed?
If you have a good skincare regime, what do you do? Do you do it regularly? If not, what is the reason for not doing? Is it because you don't know what to use? Is it because you don't have the time?
It's best to find out what your barriers are.
The reason I ask these question is because foods that are high in oils and fats are very likely to come out of your skin and cause your skin to be oily. I think we all know that! & we are much more likely to suffer from spots and oily skin if we eat a few take away foods a week. Green Veg and fruits are high in anti-oxidents which detox the skin from inside to out so these are great for those with spot prone skin and great for feeding your skin with moisture.
When exercising it is essential to ensure you clean your skin afterwards so the sweat doesn't get trapped in those pores, clogging them up and turning into dirt. Believe me, I know how easy it is to flop on the sofa after a hard working class and not want to move, it's tempting but it's much better to have nicer skin. Exercise is also good for the skin, when you work out the blood flow increases which means more oxygen and nutrients are being sent around the body! Exercise also helps with stress which is our next question....
When we are stressed we release a steroid hormone called Cortisol..you'll probably of heard of it...this is created when we are stressed and it releases extra excess oils. This is how we can also end up with greasy hair! So staying less stressed is a huge contribute to healthier skin....easier said than done I know! Yoga is a great way to relax and simple relaxing techniques such as deep breathes, as silly as it sounds we don't naturally concentrate on breathing and doing this can really help when those stress levels are high.
When it comes to a skincare regime if you don't have one but want one, be realistic! Be honest with yourself! How much time have you really got to spare? Really?! Don't say to yourself it's fine I can dedicate half an hour a night if there is no way on this earth that with two little one's running riot, the dog ripping up a slipper and world war 3 brewing that is going to happen! If it's 5 minutes, then it's 5 minutes! There's a lot you can do for your skin in minimal time, that's the beauty of it. Simple steps can be taken and be very effective. If you don't want a skincare regime but your skin needs one, then we may need to change your mind by the end of this blog.
I often ask myself this everyday. I get it, if you aren't beauty savvy or have any interest in beautifying what so ever why bother right?
It doesn't have to be with the prettiest, expensive, nicest smelling products it can be with basic products. There are so many different skincare products out there now there is something EVERYONE! Vegan, cruelty free, Paraben free, sensitive friendly, Sulphate free, oil free, anti-ageing, anti-drying, moisture boosting, water based, no alcohol, scent-free etc...literally if you want something specific it's out there!
It's good to keep your skin clean and healthy! There's so many of us that are so conscious of what we put IN our bodies but don't care too much about what we put ON our bodies!
Having good skin and having a good skin routine helps us look healthier, more radiant, less tired, it gives a great base for makeup and can help protect our skin from environmental factors too!
Simple Skincare Regime
The simplest regime out there is:
It really is as simple as 1, 2, 3! Easy! Am I right? 3 simple steps and you only need 3 products!
It's just about getting the right products for YOU, not for your teenage daughter you happen to be sharing with and we can just share because it saves on the cost. I get it, but you will have different skin for sure!
Alternate Skincare Regime
For those who have a little more time to spare or may want to pick little extras out of this regime...
Wipe off the makeup with Makeup remover Wipes
Serum (can be an anti-ageing serum, moisture serum, radiance serum, uneven skintone serum etc)
Then up to 3 times a week pop on a pampering face mask.
Spot prone skin choose a detoxing mask.
Dry skin choose a moisturising mask.
Oily skin choose a specified mask for oily skin or a Teatree mask.
Sensitive skin choose a aloe vera mask.
Normal skin choose any one you want love 😉
If you like the idea of face masks but really are fighting for time, try a 'sheet mask' these don't have to be on very long or there are even various masks nowadays that only need to be on for 5 minutes! The face mask not only helps with your skin but if you can also have time to relax with that on it will also help with those lovely stress levels. Time to take some deep breaths!
I hope after reading this you can see just how simple taking care of your skin can be and how important it is. I have always struggled with my skin and trying to rid of the pesky acne and I wish I had more information accesible at the time to ram down my throat how important it really is.
